Kildare 2-16 Wexford 0-8
So, another hiding today and Wexford were utter scutter yet again. Basic errors, poor decision making, bad execution of skills and questionable workrate were features of the performance and itās pretty concerning that weāve been well below par in all the league games so far.
Brendan Doyle and Matty Forde were unavailable through injury so Eric Bradley and PJ Banville came into the team and we made a few positional changes too so our starting line-up was:
Masterson,
Walsh, Wallace, Carter,
A Doyle, Malone, Morris,
Bradley, Fogarty,
Byrne, Colfer, Flynn,
Lyng, Cullen, Banville.
We went three points down early on and Anthony Mastersonās kick-outs were contributory factors for two of them. Gradually, we began to settle and Shane Cullen and Collie Byrne got us on the board and there was a period of stalemate for a while but we completely collapsed in the 15 minutes before half time.
Stray handpasses out of defence resulted in giveaway points and the concession of sloppy frees allowed Johnny Doyle to add to his tally too. He also got a few from play and was giving David Walsh quite a torrid time and the lead had been pushed out to 0-10 to 0-3 just before half time when we conspired to hand them a goal.
Collie Byrne won a free near midfield and a few of our defenders sprang forward to make themselves available for a pass but he pretty inexplicably screwed it straight to a Kildare player standing right in front of him. They were able to carry it forward and, with our players caught ahead of the ball, they drew the last defenders before popping it to Alan Smith. The former Arsenal striker made no mistake slotting it past Masterson.
Half time, Kildare 1-10 Wexford 0-3 and it was insipid rubbish from us. The first five minutes of the second half was the only period of the game where we showed anything approaching an acceptable standard and we kicked the first three points but it was a false dawn.
Doyle won and scored a couple of frees to settle Kildare down and Callaghan and OāNeill pointed too and they were coasting midway through the second half. Doyleās final tally was actually 0-11, with 0-4 from play. Wexford didnāt rally or threaten a fightback in the latter stages, even after they had a lad sent off, and the game was petering out when Eamonn Callaghan rose to fist a free that was dropping short into the top corner.
All in all, we didnāt defend well enough, were too sloppy in possession and didnāt carve out that many opportunities either. We conceded several cheap frees and gave scores away with misplaced passes in our own half and from sloppy kick outs. We spent far too much time passing the ball laterally and carrying it into contact and the inside forwards struggled to create space and long deliveries were generally mopped up by the Kildare defence.
Scorers: Shane Cullen (0-3, 0-2F), Paddy Colfer (0-2, 0-1F), Ciaran Lyng (0-2), Collie Byrne (0-1).
Damian Carter and Aindreas Doyle performed decently enough and Philip Wallace made a solid return. Colm Morris tried to carry the fight to them but he was troubled by Callaghanās pace. We didnāt offer much threat upfront but Paddy Colfer worked very hard.
Weāll certainly be relegated on this form but three of our remaining four games are at home so thereās a possibility of escaping the drop, albeit a small one. But we need a performance pretty quickly to give our season some positive momentum.
