Again, I agree fully with Appendage here - a senior team and an intermediate team joining forces to play in the lower grade is ridiculous. Either amalgamate and play in the higher grade or play on your own in the lower grade. And what’s this total and utter bullshit about maybe having to play minor players if they played separately. So fooking what. You’d swear a 17 or 18 year-old was incapable of playing with lads 2 or 3 years older than them. Joke.

Anyway, I went to Newbridge today for the Wexford game. I made sure to sit in a little enclave of Wexford supporters because I didn’t want to risk sitting beside some local who possibly has intimate knowledge of Jo Jo Dollard’s last movements.

Our team was very experimental and it was (using programme numbers but these were the positions):

 1. Tom Hughes (Kilanerin)
 2. Brian Malone (Shelmaliers)
 3. Clive Lawlor (Shelmaliers)
 4. Conor Murphy (St Mary’s Rosslare)
 5. Adrian Flynn (Gusserane)
 6. Shane Cullen (Gusserane) 0-1
 7. Aindreas Doyle (Taghmon-Camross)
 8. Paul O’Leary (Blackwater)
 9. Daithi Waters (St Martin’s)
 10. Ben Brosnan (Bannow-Ballymitty) 0-1
 11. Ciaran Deely (Horeswood) 0-1
 12. Sean O’Neill (Ballhogue)
 13. Gary Brilly (Starlights)
 14. Jason Murphy (Sarsfields) 0-5 (0-2F)
 15. Pat Naughter (Realt na Mara) 0-1

We were losing by 1-5 to 0-5 at half time despite Kildare having more of the play. Spot Murphy kicked three excellent points from play for us in the first half. He’s a talented lad and a really good soccer player too but is a bit nuts. He was involved with Wexford Youths FC in their debut season until Mick Wallace cut ties with him for calling Pat Dolan a ‘fat cunt’ in the dressing room after one particular game.

We then went 1-7 to 0-5 down before we got a run of four points without reply to come back to within one (two frees from Murphy, one very good one from Deely and the last from Shane Cullen after he moved up to centre forward). However, we won fook all ball around midfield in the last 15 minutes and they scored the last five points to ease away.

Tom Hughes was alright in goal - decent handling, was beaten in a one versus one. Brian Malone had a very good game bar giving away an easy pointed free near the end for two hops. Clive Lawlor was solid enough but Conor Murphy struggled. Poor distribution from him coming out with the ball cost us 1-1.

Adrian Flynn wasn’t at his best and went off in the first half with an ankle injury. Peter Hughes came on and wasn’t too impressive either. Shane Cullen was quite good at the back and tried to do some playmaking when he went forward but had few options. Aindreas Doyle was okay and worked hard.

The two lads in midfield were outplayed. Daithi Waters went off late in the first half with concussion and Brendan Doyle came on. Graeme Molloy came on for O’Leary in the second half.

Ben Brosnan was decent at times but faded in the second half. Sort out your hair too son - you’re not in Summer Bay. Deely worked hard and linked the play well enough. Sean O’Neill wasn’t really a factor and went off injured after colliding with a team-mate. Collie Byrne replaced him and wasn’t much cop.

Gary Brilly’s not really up to much - no offence to the lad. Spot Murphy kicked his first point from full forward before moving to left half forward to leave a two-man full forward line, with Deely playing the roaming role. He kicked another two smashing points after that, one from over 50 yards out, but he’s not one for tracking back and covering the overlapping wing back - their best player Michael Conway burst forward for 3 points from play himself from wing back, 2 when Spot wasn’t arsed running back with him. Pat Naughter has a bit of pace and got a decent point but himself and Brilly weren’t really a threat.

Manager watch: Jason did plenty of posturing, posing and shouting to make himself noticed and kept the squad out in a huddle on the pitch at the end while pointing dramatically and forcibly.

We now enter the shield competition and I believe we’ve a home tie next week.
Good man bandage, great post. Seems like a pretty raw wexford team all right, any idea if Kildare were near full strength?

Kildare weren’t anywhere near full strength either. The had a few first choice lads playing though - the famed wrestler Mick Foley was centre back, Ronan Sweeney was centre forward, the lad Alan Smith, their main forward when they got to the AI U21 Final last year, and who used to play with Arsenal back in the 1980s, was playing. James Kavanagh scored 1-2 from wing forward and he was on their championship team last season too.

You can tell that lad is half duffry, mountain men love the wrestling

i remember seeing Gary Brilly tried out last year too and been otter usualess in Wexford Park during the league… also lads its no Graham Molloy its Graeme…

be good to see what the team is like come Feb 1st for start of league… which ive received notice that i cannot attend due to other commitments that day which i am most annoyed about… hopefully will get into the park next weekend as dont have any other plans

I can understand why the likes of Duffry would be upset to lose to an amalgamation of teams but to say that Horeswood and St James were medal hungry is a bit stupid.

They should definitely have been in the top division but that is hardly their fault. Ramsgrange may have managed to scrape a team together but Horeswood would have come nowhere close to fielding a fifteen. The 10 players on the panel from there included 5 minors. You could argue that Horeswood could have used the rest of their minor team to make up the numbers but with the minor championship also being run off in December and January, it would have put a strain on the young players. And also when Horeswood minors won their county semi final last week they had only the bare 15,

The population of rural parishes has diminshed in the last few years and people who follow Wexford GAA will know that many parishes have had to merge to field teams in the last few years. Surely it’s better to do this than for players to be lost to the game because their club didn’t have enough players to field a team.

I can see the other side of the argument but to insult the clubs without any knowledge of the situation is ridiculous.

On a more positive note, it was great to see that the two best players on the pitch are still minors in 2009. Matthew O Hanlon gave a fantastic display and Declan Murphy is one of the best under age forwards I have seen. The two of them were head and shoulders above everyone yesterday and it looks good for the county minor team this year.
An experimental Wexford team lost to Kildare in O’Byrne cup. Any diehards make it to the match?

Kildare 1-12 Wexford 0-9
I went to it. Handy as the ground is a 15 minute walk from my house.

Not a classic. Bandage’s report covers it well. Really faded away in the last quarter.

Hopefully we get Kilkenny in The Shield.

We’re playing Westmeath next Sunday at 2pm in Monamolin in the O’Byrne Shield. I don’t think I’m going to be home next weekend so I won’t be able to attend unfortunately.

I see Paddy Power are offering 11/8 on either of the Wexford senior teams to make an All Ireland semi final…

Would there be any value in that in the opinion of the wexican lads on here?

11/8 no way. 5/2 would be worth considering. Just about
Non-Wexican btw

id say our football should deff get there all depends for the hurlers this year but they could shock us all yet

I thought it was fairly short myself…5/2 wouldn’t be a bad bet on it lazerus, certainly worth a punt at that price…

Not great value in the bet at that price in my opinion.

CG, I don’t know how you can say we should definitely make the football semi-finals this year. Last year was our first semi-final in 60 years - it’s not as if we have a recent track record of reaching successive semi-finals. We were good last year and we could replicate it but we could be a flash in the pan either.

It’s impossible to predict what the hurlers will do.

didnt say we should deff if did didnt mean to … reckon there is alot more chance of a football semi than a hurling semi

Make utter fools of themselves at least 3 times would seem a pretty good prediction going by the last 10 years.

To be fair, they are in Div 2 this year so I am reducing that to at least twice or as the song says 2 times.

Wexford on the look out for a new sponsor
08 January 2009

One of the longest sponsorship agreements on the intercounty scene has come to an end with Wexford now looking for a new sponsor after Wexford Creamery decided not to renew their deal.

The deal had been in place since teams were allowed to display sponsors on their jerseys in the 1991 season and as such they have been the only name to feature on the Model Countys adult jerseys.

“The County Board are now in the process of seeking new sponsors for their adult county teams,” explained PRO Mary Foley.

“Everyone involved with GAA in Wexford would like to acknowledge the courtesy and generosity shown to them by the current Managing Director, Eamonn Murphy the previous MD Seamus OBeirne and all the staff at their offices in Rocklands, Wexford.”

As a former Wexford Creamery employee, I would like to thank Mary Foley for her kind words.

Incorrect - I remember seeing the name Buckler on it before Wexford Creamery. Unless the 2 are related somehow? Sad to see them go but I suppose its a sign of the times. They’ve been great sponsors for Wexford GAA over the years. Who’ll replace them? Celtic Bookmakers? Sam McCauley? World of Wonder? Mick Wallace?!
