In the hot seat, awaiting take-off despite severe turbulence

Name: Michael Foley
Heineken USA and Foley began a major marketing campaign to appeal to younger people.
As chief executive of Heineken, Foley unveiled marketing plans last year for the flagship Heineken brand which was to be the largest one-year marketing programme for an imported beer. “A strong marketing man, an imaginations man,” Foley was also the first to sponsor a GAA team jersey, with the Buckler sponsorship of the Wexford hurling team.
Bit of a tangent, but what’s he at now?
I have no recollection of Buckler - funny how you just forget stuff like that.
Haven’t a clue actually. Don’t think he would have got any high profile position after what happened with Aer Lingus. Think one of his parents was sick for a while so he was mostly around home. He spoke at our end of year awards night in school one year when he was still with Heineken. Seemed fairly down to earth with no bullshit about him.
Buckler was only there for one season (or 2 max) from what I remember. Around the time Stoney Burke was in goal.
Yeah Buckler was the sponsor in 1991 alright. Might not be readily remembererd as I think the original rule was that the lettering had to be smaller than one inch. Fuck me the GAA was some paranoid then.
On the point of the Paddy Power special - not bad value considering Wexford have reached either a hurling or football semi more often thatn not since the turn of the decade.

If my memory serves me correctly, not only were Buckler the first sponsors of the Wexford hurlers, but also the first sponsors of any intercounty GAA team.
The rules on jersey sponsorship were relaxed in the spring of 1991, just in time to allow the Wexford hurlers to put Buckler on their shirts for the NHL Final v the Biffos. To further stretch my memory, they may have also had the sponsor’s name on the back of their jersies too - just like Meath did with Kepak for the 4 game saga v Dublin that summer.
Two Wexford under-age players have been handed hefty bans following an assault on a local referee.
Glynn-Barntown player Conor Coyne has been hit with a 56 week ban, while his colleague Micheal Roche will be out for 48 weeks.
The punishments were handed down by Wexford Coiste na nOg Board when they considered the report of inter-county referee Sean Whelan into an assault at the end of a county minor football championship semi-final clash.
Both players were alleged to have assaulted Whelan after their side had lost out by a single point to St. Anne’s at Killurin.
Having considered the full report of the match official,l the Wexford under-age Board decided to take the strongest possible action.
As a result both players will be unavailable to their club until 2010.
The bans commence from the date of the game, Sunday, 28 December.
Wexford County Board are determined to stamp out scenes of violence in their local championship games.
Last year they had also to deal with the Buffers Alley/St. Martin’s under-21 hurling game which was abandoned by referee Justin Heffernan after melee ignited when a Buffers Alley official acting as linesman is alleged to have struck a St. Martin’s player.
Both clubs were eliminated from the championship by Wexford GAA and had hefty fines of E3000 each imposed.
Buffers Alley were successful in their appeal to Leinster Council and re-instated, while St. Martin’s failed in their appeal.
A 48 and 56 week ban, they got off lightly enough IMO…
I’ve got some information from a dick who was at the game.
He reports that Clongeen’s Aidan Cullen was unfortunately at fault for both goals. His took his eye off a nothing ball, dropped it and left a tap in for the forward for the first goal. Then he dropped a high ball that resulted in another tap in for the crucial second goal in extra time.
Scorers were: Pat Naughter 1-1, Jason Murphy 1-1, Peter Hughes 0-3, Ciarn Deely 0-2, James Holmes 0-2, Ben Brosnan 0-1, Collie Byrne 0-1.
Paul O’Leary was yellow carded early in the first half and Graeme Molloy and Brian Malone received yellows in extra time too.
We finished with 13 men after Molloy’s yellow and following an injury to Jason Murphy having used all of our subs.
Judging by the 8 or 9 players mentioned above, it seems like another experimental line-up.
other names i heard that played today were George Sunderland from castletown, Bockie doyle from St.James’, Andreas Doyle of Taghmon and Adrian Flynn of Gusserane…
Hurling it would have to be Fitzhenry… i think i heard recently if we get far enough this year he will have played the most championship matches in the country i think its 4 or 5 games he needs to get the title
