The head on the baldy lad

Not sure we need another players’ man - I think we need someone ruthless like Ger Halligan. Remember when he took over after JJ Barrett decked Michael Curley and he was quick to sideline the likes of Philip Tubritt and Derek O’Reilly? Think he made them train on their own. We need that iron fist approach - we’re too soft.[/quote]

It was the “iron fist” which cost JJ his job

It’s great to see fellow clubman, Bandage, highlight some of Halligan’s early mistakes, which led to his inevitable demise.

what is anyone opinion on aidan o’brien?

i think a lot will depend on his backroom team, anyone know when he has to have this ratified by?

I’m concerned that his managerial experience within the county almost solely relates to schools and clubs in the New Ross district. I worry that the bias against Sarsfield GFC will continue and I would have much preferred a Wexford district based candidate. All that said, I don’t really care about the Wexford football team and hope Liam Dunne has been successful in getting a raft of them to commit to the hurling team next season.

to be honest, these days a good manager is basically a really good organiser and motivator. And I think O Brien is that. He knows how good intelligent football is to be played, and isnt afraid to try new tactics to suit individual games. Wouldnt surpise me to see John Hegarty and Leigh O Brien on the backroom team, and maybe some sort of specialised physical coach.

He has been over county minor and U21 teams as well Bandage. His schools record is one of the best going. And has been sucessful with the majority of club teams he has been with too. He is a good man manager, and likes to talk things through with players and not just shout and roar abuse. He can get over technical at times and gets too bogged down in ideas, and at times might not be the best motivator in shouting and roaring and getting lads up for games, but then teams and players take things like that differently. Hope it goes well for him anyway. After hearing sports reporters on radio stations call Jason Ryan the most succesful manager of Wexford football that has ever been, he has big boots to fill. And I just hope the players buy into it and arent left whining for Ryan as some already are.

Fair enough Gman, when was his last stint as U21 manager?

As an aside, was it he that lost the head with the referee in the 1999 Peter’s College-Good Counsel clash when Eric Bradley’s late goal sealed a smash and grab 3-3 to 1-8 victory for the New Ross school who ultimately went on to win the All Ireland Senior Colleges “A” football championship?

Actually, was O’Brien in charge of the U21s when we got to the Leinster Final with the team containing Brosnan and Waters and them around 4 or 5 years ago?

yup, but it was Philip Doyle who got that late goal, and then Liam Murphy missed a 14m free in front of goal to level it. John Finn was sent off on a disgraceful second yellow card following an altercation with Oliver Callens buddy James McDonald. Aids lost it and went mental at the ref, who sent him off. I had never seen him, nor have since seen him, react like that. Usually it was Kehoe that would be going mental.

yup. Brosnan was sent off in the semi final and missed the game against Kildare in Wexford Park. They would still have lost anyway, that was a decent Kildare side and an average enough Wexford team. David Murphys brother was captain I think too.

Conor was captain alright I think. Where’s he these days? Seemed a great prospect for a future full back. He may have been centre back on that team though.

Reading over this thread… Pure class from the sars man…

Best of luck to the harriers tomorrow…

What class where?

I’m back in beautiful Wexford town ahead of tomorrow’s county senior hurling final.

It’s Faythe Harriers first final appearance since the 2001 victory as they seek to dethrone 4-in-a-row chasing Oulart-The Ballagh.

One more river to cross - 'mon the Harriers.

Oylegate won the Intermediate hurling final replay by a point.

Sorry for coming late to this, but thats the simpleton Wexford goalkeeper isnt it? The fella who insists on lepping around like a fucking eejit waving scores wide and cried like a fucking girl when he let in a goal that lost a game once?

If so, fucking excellent

Yes, it’s Masterson. He plays outfield for Castletown.

The class was shown when he commiserated with me and my ilk

Famous Faythe Harrier Dermot O’Leary has tweeted his best wishes to the team.

Oulart-The Ballagh 2-12 Faythe Harriers 0-13.

Fairly disappointed. Weren’t as clinical as them - missed some good chances and were punished for a few small enough mistakes. Game was played in wet conditions which worsened as the game progressed.

Keith Rossiter was MOTM at full back and he dominated that sector. It was 6-5 to them at half with the Harriers knocking over the last 3 scores of the half. Kevin Gore struck over his third point from play from midfield straight after the resumption to level it but then Rory Jacob got a decisive goal.

Lee Chin’s solo runs from deep are often inspirational, and he outplayed Garrett Sinnott in the first half, but he overplays it on occasion and that goal came from turning over the ball around halfway. Jacob gathered possession in the right corner, beat his man, soloed in at an angle and finished to the top corner off his left.

Richie Kehoe had a superb game for the Harriers at centre back, especially in the first half, and Emmet Keeling was excellent to his right too. The Harriers backs were really good as a unit actually but the forwards were held by Oulart. Their full backline was dominant and the Harriers half forward line was restricted to one point from play too.

The second goal pretty much settled it. Jacob retrieved a point attempt that was seemingly going wide and Nicky Kirwan knocked home the rebound after Jacob’s shot was excellently saved. A goal out of nothing really and that made it 2-11 to 0-10.

The Harriers fought on gamely and had a flurry of late wides along with a saved Jim Berry 21 yard free but Oulart secured their fourth title in a row and tenth overall since their first ever victory in 1994.

Their strength in depth was exemplified by the subs they introduced - Paul Roche, Shaun Murphy and Mick Jacob.
