Wexford GAA 2013

How would you be expected to know if you only read about games on tfk?

I see what you did there.

I’ve been familiar with Waters since his U21 days Appendage.

Saw Daithi Waters’ auld lad drinking a coffee just after half time in the front row of the stand…

:o

Then you know his left foot is his good one.

Christ above, have you lads gone a bit simple over the weekend?

No, sick of your constant degrading of the footballers.

I was thinking back over the game last night again, when the anger has subsided and a number of things occurred to me that I hope don’t get lost with the feeling that we were robbed.

  1. Joey Wadding is hopeless at corner back, an utter liability.
  2. We were dire at winning breaks from kick outs and lack a ground hog like Morris. With James Holmes, Red Barry and Paddy Byrne in the half forward line we’re seriously lacking in this department and it allowed Westmeath to stay in touch. Holmes may improve and his work rate in general cannot be faulted.
  3. Shane Roche and Rory Quinlivan are failing to impose themselves on the game. Roche scores a few good points but he costs us scores as well, he had PJ Banville free and facing an open goal but opted to put it over the bar himself in the first half.
  4. Adrian Flynn needs to concentrate on defending first. He causes a lot of damage going forward but their number 12 that he was marking did a lot of damage for an average enough footballer.

I thought Quinlivan had a reasonably good game yesterday Croppy, much improved on previous matches anyway. Roche can be frustrating alright but he has still managed to score 2-13 in the league so far. It will be interesting to see what happens when Lyng is back proper and we have another left footed free taker.

and I thought Wadding did ok, and is having a decent enough season. He defended alright on Glennon, the goals were past being Waddings fault, and one of his points was when he was taken out of it.

I also thought Furlong won a serious amount of breaking ball in the middle, and if he keeps up his form, he may well be the type of player like Morris was. Paddy is another option for fielding high ball, and won a couple himself yesterday. Wasnt overly impressed with Holmes though, made a few silly mistakes and generally didnt do enough positive things.

Should agree with you on something though Croppy, so may as well be on Roche. When he plays the ball and gets on it, he does well. but there can be huge amounts of time between his posessionas, and he can go missing very easily alright. And I agree on flynn too, but I am relly unimpressed there this year. Whenever he gets the ball, the whole pace of the attack completely slows down, and we get this ambling ball going sideways after 3 or 4 solos. He kicked a lovely point though off the outside of the left, even if he did fuck up a dummy solo to get the space.

he might be having a decent season Gman but he’s not a corner back, he’s too slow to turn, and not agile enough, nothing againdst him and i actually think he would be an excellent wing back as he is quite quick in a straight line and has a good for eye for the posts.

yeah maybe so. but Malone is womewhat similar, in that I dont think he is a great corner back, but is good with the ball and good defensively. hard to know. I didnt think he’d make it to be honest, but I’d rather Wadding in than some of the other media darlings that we have as other options.

said media darling isnt really getting a look in at the moment…

furlong seems like a find, and remember malone did play corner back on the leinster side and i dont think ive really seen him found out at corner back. joey was tormented against offaly in 2011 in a game we easily won… he never looks sharp enough in the corner.

Malone got destroyed at corner back in the Leinster final in 2008. he just could not read high balls over the top. I think both Malone and Wadding are better nearer the 45 than closer to goal.

Furlong is doing well alright. Very small and light though, but worked very well yesterday out the field.

the leinster final 2008… for fucks sake,… on game in the alst 5 years where he got skinned…

i dont disagree that he would make abetter wing back, if he would kick the ball, but at the moment he seems to be our best option in the corner with furlong i the other and molloy full…

 you said you havent really seen him found out at corner back, I replied with the first game off the top of my head where he was. next time put a qualifier on your statements!

Furlong hasnt lined out at corner back yet for us, not sure he is being lined up for there the way the team is at the moment. he was never near the full back line yesterday despite being named at corner back. I had initially thought it was strange seeing him at No12, but that was only as a defensive type role. still think we are lacking another player in the full back line. need a younger version of Mutley. We havent had a proper replacement of someone who will just do the shitty things a corner back has to do in stopping opponents.

was he not corner back against Louth? shitty things being the operative word, like give away free after free… dont get me wrong mutley did he have his moments, but he was never spectacular…

he was always too eager to foul and still is in club play…

There must be a half decent corner back somewhere in the county…

ah I know Mutley fouled and gave away frees, but still, if you need someone to do a job and stick on a man, he was it. our lads are too loose and let the opposition run around. Mutley had his flaws, but he was still effective. I’m surprised a few others from that U21 team havent been given a shot defensively.

the one thing that will make a defender better is pressure on the ball coming in, cutting diwn the amount of time an attacking player has to make a decision is key to good defensive play. Mutley was blessed with his speed if he could have read the play and went for the ball a bit more he would have been excellent…

who was the other corner back on the 2011 u21 team?

furlong, Gaule, ?
butler breen ?
Reagan MOH

kelly kent omcgov
kog kehoe halpin.

who else am i missing

Leacy was centre back, with Carty beside him. Breen was corner back.
