Wexford GAA 2014

Offaly at home on June 25th in the Leinster Under 21 Hurling Semi-Final. Westmeath/Dublin on the other side of the draw.

The senior football team for Saturday’s championship opener against Longford is being named tonight. Anyone heading to Pearse Park? I think I’ll give it a miss as we don’t need any football distractions now something’s stirring in Wexford hurling.

Well done Wexford, great win last night

Actually the football team has been announced this morning. @count of monte cristo and @padjo will surely comment on it.

Not a lot of size and physicality in the backs. As ever, we’ll be reliant on Waters dominating midfield to provide a winning platform*.

I reckon Longford will beat us though.

*copyright Brendan Furlong.

Will O’Regan stay half forward or drop into midfield to help Waters and Byrne with one of Brosnan or O’Grady coming a bit deeper?

Seems odd to drop Rossitor now given that he played most of the league - didn’t Furlong line out at centre forward for most of the league campaign as well?

did we ever have a lot of size in the backs?

Our bench could be our downfall

Unfortunately i havent seen many league games so Im not best placed to judge.

Firstly it is ridiculous this game in Longford at 7 o clock on a saturday evening.

To the team:

Our backs have never ever been physical, they rely more on speed, we have a solid enough full bacvk line but i would fear that Longford will target high diagonal ball towards Carty’s corner, with McCormack and Mcdonald they have two potent forwards in the inside line.

Containing Mickey Quinn will be a big ask, id stick paddy b on him and tell him to break every ball off him and follow him everywhere.

the forwards hav serious pace in holmes and O’grady, but everything will run through Lyng and Banvillle, i would envisage Banville perhaps moving closer to goal to play in tandem with O’Grady and lyng and brosnan playing deeper roles with perhaps Reagan moving to Midifeld to bolster a physical presence there.

Malone is deceptively strong and an excellent tackler so will hopefully slow down any penetration through the middle, he could possibly have his hands full with Paul Barden but Barden’s star is on the wane.

Furlong was hurt for a lot of the league and was never a CF he was simply a stop gape whilst we waited for other players to return, Rossiter has lost out to Flynn which isnt exactly a shock, we have a a good ball playing half back line all capable of slotting over a score.

I think we will beat Longford even if i cant give numerous reasons as to why.

I also imagine losing James Breen from the panel (who did well at centre back in the 2 league games I was at) is a factor in moving Furlong back into defence. He’s most comfortable there and might actually play corner back to do a specialist marking job on McCormack or someone. Possibly better to release Carty to half back too.

Sitting near the Kilkenny senior squad members in Nowlan Park last night, seeing their glum faces and hearing their scathing comments about their young countymen, it got me thinking that hurling in Kilkenny is on a downward spiral. Should we be thinking of a new Wexford GAA song now or should we release it after we secure the Leinster Senior championship?

Anyone going to Pearse Park tomorrow ?

@Bandage never replied to the PM I sent him yesterday asking same question.

I’m thinking of heading along and it would be only marvellous if I met a few online friends there.

Sorry, pal. I forgot to reply to you. I don’t think I’ll bother going to the game. I think the best thing would be for Wexford to make a low profile exit from the football championship that doesn’t have a negative impact on the feel good factor surrounding hurling at the moment. I’ll see you in Wexford Park on Saturday week if you’re heading to that though.

Is a bit worrying that you’re not even married yet and you’re looking to travel to Longford to attend their tie against Wexford as a neutral?

My attendance at games will not reduce once married mate. I’ve made that abundantly clear !!

Ah Carrick is only 25 mins away so it’s a handy spin and think it should be close and competitive.

Sure I’ll prob head for the Hyde on Sunday aswell
