Wexford GAA 2014

Andrew Shore starts ahead of Sinnott. Presume he will play at 6 will Chin either sweeping or going to midfield

Did Dunne not say in his pre match interview there that there would be no changes?

You’re worse to be listening to him

I wasn’t believing him, just wondering did I hear him right. He’s some fucking ape.

Pot. Kettle.

I dont recalling lying live on air the last time I was on RTE pal.

i was implying youre an ape, sport.

Didn’t realise until the minute silence that one of Wexfords greatest ever hurlers Tim Flood died on Thursday. Only one way for this Wexford team to honour his legacy.

You didnt imply it awfully well, sport.

Hopefully Tony Doran sees a win today

youre just not that intelligent.

Holy fuck!

You’re, you’re. I even cautioned you on the first one, twice is just ignorance sport.

Ignorance in that Im ignoring your suggestion sport.

hon wexford.

Rory needs to cop on.

Habye Wexford!

Mcdonald get panned off the ball?

I don’t want to see Keith Rossiter as spare man. I’ve seen it too many times before. We need to be bold here. We got a bit giddy/nervous once we realised we were so far ahead. Some over zealous tackling and poor decisions in possession and shot selection as the half progressed.

We really should have won that game but it’s encouraging to see the massive improvement in the team over the past couple of years.

Much better day for Dunne and co too with most of the match ups/positional decisions working such as Chin into midfield and having a strong game, Moore centre back on Kelly (until Kelly was moved from that sector), Kenny on Conlon etc. We couldn’t live with Conor McGrath though and he kept Clare in the game really.

Our extra time performance was actually very good and fairly composed when our numerical advantage was removed and that gives me plenty of encouragement for the replay.

It’s kind of baffling how we didn’t finish it off in normal time though after leading 2-7 to 0-3 early on, 2-9 to 0-10 at half time and even extending the lead to 7 points early in the second half against 14 men.

As has been mentioned, we missed a raft of goal chances. Jacob in the first half, Chin, O’Keeffe and McGovern in the second half and Guiney in extra time. Great teams kill opponents with goals but, given the context of the game and already having the lead and man advantage, we should have been popping over points for some of those chances to keep them at arm’s length.

I had no issue with us pointing the penalty actually. But our lads should note how McGrath kept the ball low for his goal. Guiney, for example, needed to tip that ball low past the advancing keeper rather than hitting it high against his body.

The referee seemed to get the penalty decision wrong but he wasn’t consistent after half time and we were on the end of it. What was overcarrying or barging/charging for us was often a free for them and he gave them a few phantom frees when our lads were generally standing up and crowding the man in possession without fouling him.

We were a bit naive at times though with our tackling and general defending and decision making too. We also missed some very scoreable point opportunities such as Harry Kehoe with 2 wides in the first half and then Guiney and McDonald with a couple each after half time.

It was a really spirited performance though and a great effort. Whatever about Clare not being at their best, we deserve credit for our own performance. Loads of good pieces of play, excellent scores taken and chances created. McGovern with 1-4 from play, Morris converting nearly all of his placed balls and chipping in with a few from play too. The likes of O’Keeffe and Byrne also made positive contributions from the bench and our panel depth is good for the first time in years.

So we didn’t win a game where we had a nice lead for a long time and a man advantage. But on the other hand, we were two points behind on two different occasions in extra time away to the All Ireland champions when it was 15 v 15 again and we came back to get the draw.

All to play for still. Well done to all the chaps - it was heartwarming stuff.

More importantly, how was the train?
