But you were getting that money back even when you weren’t paying it as well

Not the point Fagan.

Night school for the junior cert is cruelty.

Believe it or not it was her own idea. I was perfectly happy to let her study at homega. She approached us after the first week back and asked if she could do it. In fairness to her she has worked hard and at a recent parent/teacher meeting even the teachers had remarked about the improvement in her grades

The govt are making public sector workers contribute more to the trough which the defined benefit pension scheme is paid from. If my employer told me, we’re taking 20 snots from your pay but we’re going to give it back to you with interest when you retire, I would consider it a savings scheme. It’s the self entitled attitude of public servant leeches that would have you believing it to be a pay cut.

To be fair he is fairly cool .

Is it night school or ‘homework club’ straight after school? The latter would be completed by a lot of kids.

Sounds like it’s what we used to call Supervised Study, where you would stay on for two hours after school to do your homework / study

It’s night study chief. Supervised by teachers. It’s only available for Junior and leaving certs as far as I know. It’s 200 eurose a term which is reasonable value.

That’s it

There wasn’t much mention of the pension being effective remuneration by PS union types when they were rolling into benchmarking negotiations bleating about how their pay structure was unfair and there’s little mention of it now when going out on strike. It’s all “starting salary for a guard is only €23k” and very little “starting salary for a guard is €23k but they get x additional € in allowances and y additional € in pension contributions so their effective starting remuneration is actually significantly higher”

It turns out it’s remuneration if you have to contribute to it and otherwise we should all pretend it’s no big deal

Nurses voting on industrial action now, they may tear up Lansdowne Rd and start over

The country is fucked

In fairness rightly or wrongly, workers never view pension as part of their salary. They may see it as part of the cost of employing them like PRSI, but ultimately workers only view what’s in their pay packet as salary.

The whole house of cards is coming down.

Who’s next after the nurses?

Agreed It isn’t salary, it is remuneration though and employees across all sectors certainly view it as part of the attraction of a job along with other non-salary remuneration such as holidays, health insurance, bonuses, allowances etc etc.

My wife is a nurse so I know loads of them. To a person I’d say they would prefer additional staff rather than additional money. It would be a choice between an extra 10/15 quid a week probably vs opportunity to have your lunch

My wife recently started a new job after a year off
She works in a specialist area which should be well funded (it’s a cash cow for the hospital) and she is in shock at the state of the services.
