A very defensive post ---- Youād know well that I ran 3 half marathons in my 20s, one in 1.35 ā¦ I put that away then in my 30s like any sane person would.
Very defensive post, hadnāt realised you were a renowned half marathon runner
I was playing senior football and munster senior league soccer in my twenties, now I run in the mornings because I enjoy it and canāt do much else, if you think running 14 miles is killing myself then it says something about you
Both of you are displaying an awful lot of ignorance here ā¦ For two very well educated lads itās very disappointing.
Hereās a basic lesson in biology for both of you - once you go over 31 your testosterone (the stuff that makes you a man) decreases year on year. One of the only ways to combat this is to work your muscles.
Testosterone is vital for keeping you younger, healthier and more importantly, warding off all kinds of problems as you enter your autumn years.
Lads flogging themselves to death running in their 30s/40s will be decrepit hunch backs by the time they get to 60 ā itās the most bizarre anti logic thing anyone could do ā itās like smoking 40 major a day.
I wouldnt say avid - I didnt train for 2 of them. The one I did train for I did in 1.35 and retired.
Iāll second this. A good pal of mine went mad into running in his late 30s. Stone mad. Lost a hape of weight. Done a few marathons. In the last 5 years heās had 3 operations. Two on his stomach and one on his back.
A lad I know from the internet ran a few marathons and now he has AIDS and is facially disfigured
Still too much of a jump from 10 to 14. You risk injury.
For me, itās trying to find a balance between the two. The correct strength work for me helps me avoid injuries. I tend to neglect it too much in favour of going for a run or a cycle or a swim. Thatās going to change.
On the other hand, I know a fella whoās a fierce gym monkey and on the face of it is far fitter than me. He does loads of research into his technique and gets all the gym shit right. Run 5km and his body breaks down
Different strokes for different folks. Some are born to run. The great John Collins, originally from out your way @anon61878697 started running marathons in his 50s and finished in his 80s, not getting a single injury
Sorry mate, I havenāt made myself clear, Iāve done it in steps, Iāve been reading Hal Higdon
Iām just thinking of your son here ā¦ Backinatracksuit wont get it with three daughters, but youāll want to be able to puck around/ kick around with him in 10 yearsā¦ Give over the silly running and start looking after yourself.
When John Collins did his 30th DCM at 83, his daughter and grandson were also on the starting line mate
Thatās a bit of strange response.
Basically, the same lad would have been the same go as yourself. Senior hurler, junior rugby.
He was told by medical professionals that he was running all wrong. Basically running 20 odd miles with a bad gait. The repeated impact on his body through the legs fucked up his organs and his back.
Hes still going mad at it but I think he went to an athletics coach and actually learned how to run properly
Are you seriously using this one chap with a bad gait as a case study into why nobody should run?
Extreme distances mate.
Aerobically it might be fine but in the long run it does you no good.
No need to be a prick about it.
How am I being a prick? Honestly, thereās been thousands of articles published about the rights and wrongs of running, your pal ran with a bad gait and got injured so now I should pack it up??
The AIDS thing was a bad gag, I thought youād get it.
Any form of exercise can cause injury, I like running, Iām not that bad at it, so Iāll tip away for a while longer.
Serious chest - arms session done there a little earlier.
My right tit hasnt stopped twitching since.
Get yourself up to the South Infirmary quick
We go again
A paltry 50k today to report. Twas a 8 hour challenge but I bailed after just after 4 hours. It was 1 mile laps so after 31 enough was enough on the day. I wanted to be back in ganleys anyway for the match. God I love these sort of events. I think I will give up marathons. They are too violent
